About Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque is the largest city in the state of New Mexico. Located in the central part of the state along the Rio Grande, the city has just over 520,000 residents and ranks 34th in the United States among some of the largest cities. The city of Albuquerque was founded in 1706 and was built in the traditional Spanish village pattern: a central plaza surrounded by government buildings, homes and a church. Often referred to as “Old Town Albuquerque,” or simply “Old Town,” Albuquerque was named by governor Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdes. Interestingly, the city is split into “quadrants”. The Northeast Quadrant is situated near the base of the Sandia Mountains and is the largest quadrant both geographically as well as by population. The Northwest Quadrant contains historic 'Old Town Albuquerque' which dates back to the 1700s. This section also contains a multitude of different housing. The Southeast Quadrant contains such attractions as: Eclipse Aviation, Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque Studios and University Stadium. Lastly, the Southwest Quadrant has traditionally been known for its agriculture and rural setting, often referred to as the “South Valley”. In 2006, Forbes Magazine named Albuquerque as one of the best cities in America for business and careers.
