10-Time DUI Offender Finally Gets to Spend a Little QT Behind Bars

File this one under the heading of “some people never learn.”

How many DUI’s should it take before you stop? Two?  Four?  Try ten!  That’s right, ten and counting for Manuel Texeira III , a 51 year old residing in Hawaii.  Texeira will be off the road for a little while now that he has been sentenced to five years in jail for his habitual instances of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Texeira’s attorney tried to argue that his client is an alcoholic with bad judgement who needs help and asked judge Dexter Del Rosario for a year in prison.  According to the Honolulu Advertiser, Judge Del Rosario was curious as to his drinking problem:

“Del Rosario questioned Texeira about why he hadn’t sought treatment for his alcoholism sooner.  ”I tried once,” Texeira answered, saying the program where he applied “didn’t accept me.”  Del Rosario then sentenced Texeira to the five-year prison term.  ”You need help. You need to be in a structured environment,” the judge said.  ”You haven’t been able to help yourself,” Del Rosario said.”

Prosecutors argued that Texeira presents a danger on the roadways and asked for consecutive 5 year year sentences to be served back to back.  Texeira’s long history of DUI convictions dating back more than twenty years certainly didn’t seem to help his cause in the eyes of the law.  Hopefully Texeira will be able to stay away from booze while behind bars.
