5 Tips For Surviving the Holiday Drive

  1. Pack Light- When you are traveling on the road, you don’t want to be burdened with a lot of luggage or a lot of things that you don’t need.  However, you want to create a nice balance so that you make sure you bring the things with you that are important such as a First aid kit, non-perishable food and a flashlight, etc. Before you leave, make sure that you make a list and check it twice!
  2. Pre-trip Auto Check- If you’re planning on taking a trip longer than an hour, it would be in your best interest (not to mention the people who are traveling with you) to make sure that all of your car maintenance is done ahead of time.  This includes things such as oil changes, wheel rotation and balance and electrical checks.  After all, the last thing that you want to be dealing with (other than traffic) is a car that won’t work properly!
  3. Entertainment-If you’re traveling with kids, make sure that you bring plenty of things to keep them occupied.  The more occupied they are with books, toys or movies, the more you will be able to focus clearly on the road and other potentially bad drivers. Music or audio books also make an excellent choice for the grownups.
  4. Breathe-Every day; every minute that you are on the road commuting somewhere, there seems to be a reason for you to just totally lose it and want to drive yourself or someone else off the road.  Road rage can get the best of us, but it doesn’t have to.  Take a few deep breaths and find your ‘happy place’.  Failing that, call a friend to vent or put on some soothing tunes.
  5. Stop-Perhaps the most common mistake that people make on lengthy road trips is that they are so focused on making it to where they are going in record time, that they often don’t give themselves the much needed break that they deserve (and should probably take).  Stopping every hundred miles or so to stretch will not only keep you awake and alert, but it can also help to break up the monotony of the ride.
