8 Tips to Improve Your Gas Mileage
A few days ago, I had just filled up my gas tank and paid $1.99/gallon. Only two days later, I noticed that the price had shot up to $2.26. If this is any indication of how the remainder of the year is going to be, then I won’t be the only one leaving my car parked as much as possible. That being said, there are various ways that you can improve your gas mileage if you do find that you have to drive somewhere:

- Slow Down! Speeding is not only dangerous, but it eats up gas like nobody’s business, so slow it down!
- Go For Regular Tune-Ups! Based on the kind of repair as well as how well it is done, making sure that your car is well tuned can improve your gas mileage by almost 4 percent.
- Keep Those Tires Inflated! Your gas mileage can actually be improved approximately 3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can not only lessen you gas mileage, but they are dangerous! Additionally, properly inflated tires preserve the life of the tire so that it will last longer.
- Use the Correct Motor Oil! According to FuelEconomy.gov, you can actually improve your gas mileage by 1-2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. If you’re not sure what it is, ask your local mechanic to help you.
- Replace Your Air Filter! While there is some controversy over whether or not replacing your air filter will actually save you on gas, it is nonetheless something that you need to be aware of when it actually does need to be replaced because it will help to preserve the life of your vehicle.
- Get More Exercise! Contrary to popular belief, we do NOT need a vehicle to get us from point A to point B- especially when the distance between these two points is within walking or biking distance. Don’t be lazy- be motivated!
- Carpool! When it comes to driving, we are sometimes selfish in the fact that we don’t like to have to share a space with other people. However, carpooling will often save you a bundle down the line. So, buddy up and make friends with a co-worker!
- Time Your Ride! While some of you may refuse to believe it, actually avoiding driving during times when the traffic is heavy or congested will save you money in gasoline. If you can, avoid the traffic at all costs!
