5 Car Dealership Extras That Are Unnecessary

We’ve all had it happen before. You are getting ready to purchase your very first car when the sales person starts telling you about all of the extra “add-ons” that will make your car buying experience that much sweeter. If it’s your first time on the car buying merry-go-round, you may find yourself being taken for a loop. That being said, here are a few things, according to Yahoo News, that you could probably do without.

  1. Extended Warranties: Extended warranties always sound like a good idea because it is supposed to give the person who is buying a car that extra peace of mind just in case something goes wrong. However, one thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t have to feel pressured into buying an extended warranty that very moment. In fact, extended warranties on vehicles can always be purchased later on down the line. To top it off, the type of extended warranty that your car dealer gives you may actually wind up costing you more money; so make sure you shop around!
  2. Paint & Fabric Protection: It’s nice to think that you can spill anything on your seat and not have to worry about stains. However, purchasing fabric protection from your dealer costs significantly more money when all you have to do is go to your local automotive store or supermarket and pick up a can of Scotchguard for a few bucks. Regarding paint protection, no one likes chipped, cracked or fading paint, but you don’t need to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on it. Instead, a good coat of wax (which you can buy from your local auto store) applied once a year is more than enough.
  3. Rust-Proof: Don’t be fooled into purchasing rust protection. Instead, think of the last time you saw rust on anyone’s vehicle that wasn’t a thousand years old. Most vehicles are manufactured to withstand rust.
  4. Maintenance Plans: Many dealers will actually throw in a maintenance plan for free with the purchase of a new vehicle. Remember, while purchasing a maintenance program up front may cost less than paying for each service individually; often you can have your vehicle serviced at an outside repair shop for significantly less.
  5. Ding Protection: Seeing a scratch on your new car would understandably drive anyone crazy. However, eventually, when you’re driving at 70+ miles per hour down the highway, you are bound to have something bounce up and ding your vehicle….it’s unavoidable, so don’t waste your money.
