5 Safety Suggestions for Women Who Travel
It is unfortunate that many women still find themselves the target of thieves, criminals and others who intend to do harm. Too often we hear of women who were targeted while traveling alone by car, plane or some other means. Therefore, it is especially important that women take care to protect themselves. Start with the following five suggestions.
5 Safety Suggestions for Women Who Travel:
- Plan Ahead by making a detailed outline of your trip. Regardless of whether or not you are traveling by plane, automobile or train, have a map of where you are going as well as what documents you need to have with you. For example, if you know that you are planning a trip out of the country, check with the airport or with someone else to make sure that you have everything you need, particularly your signed and up-to-date passport, visas or any other identification.
- Tell a Friend where you are going. Even if it is something small as leaving a note with pertinent information such as the name of the hotel that you are staying at as well as an emergency number where you or a loved one can be reached at, a little goes a long way.
- Book Your Hotel Room so that it is not on the ground level or near stairwells. Always keep your safety in mind when you are traveling by yourself. When checking into your hotel room, be aware of your surroundings, and if the check-in person loudly announces your room number or says it within earshot of suspicious persons, kindly ask for a different room number and that it not be announced.
- Bring a Cell Phone with you that has international calling capabilities if you are traveling overseas or out of the country. In addition, make sure that you always keep your cell phone charger on you as well as a small hard copy of emergency contact phone number just in case technology fails you and you have to use a pay phone.
- Avoid going out at night by yourself. Even if it is a short walk to a restaurant, ask that an attendant from the hotel accompany you; otherwise, order in. Your safety is not worth the risk.
