5 Tips to Avoid Accidents

When will people ever learn how to drive? It’s no wonder that more people are opting not to drive their vehicles across the country for road trips but are, instead choosing to go with an auto transport company. It seems that driving on the roadways has become increasingly dangerous, especially since the invention of the cell phone.

Recently, I’ve been trying out this new theory of mine. It involves simply driving the speed limit. I allow myself to go no more than five over the speed limit now, and it is absolutely incredible to see not only how much gas I’ve been saving but how horrible the drivers are out there. Since I’ve slowed down to normal, I actually feel more unsafe on the roads than before. Needless to say, my defensive driving skills are as sharp as ever.

Take entrance and exit ramps on highways, for example. Now, the rules are that if your in a lane where the traffic entrance ramp is going to be dumping traffic onto, you’re supposed to allow at least one vehicle in front of you onto the highway (if it makes sense). But people don’t do this. Instead, they would rather run the person who is trying to merge off of the road before they’ll allow anyone to get in front of them. Sometimes you’ll get an aggressive entrance ramp driver who will actually race the other driver to get in front of them. It seems to be a vicious cycle.  Here are some other tips to help you avoid accidents:

5 Tips to Avoid Accidents

  1. Pay Attention! There is a difference between being alert and aware of your surroundings versus being plain nosy, which will just end up causing you all sorts of problems. There is no need for you to slow down the flow of traffic so that you can take a peek. Don’t speed, but definitely KEEP MOVING.
  2. Safe Distance- Remember the two-second rule in which you allow enough room inbetween you and the car in front of you.  If it is raining or snowing outside, you should leave even more room (at least 3 car lengths) to allow enough reaction time.
  3. School Buses-No matter how much of a rush you are in, always stop when a school bus has it’s flashing lights on and is stopped in front of you.  Rushing is not worth the risk when there are children involved.
  4. Seatbelts- There is much controversy and debate over whether or not people should be forced to wear seatbelts.  However, if your safety is important to you, it is always advised to keep your seatbelt fastened while the car is in motion.
  5. Lights On- Whenever your windshield wipers are operating, make sure that your lights are turned on.  This is true even if you can see fine without them.  The lights are more of a safety for other drivers on the road so that they can see your vehicle.

More people get into car accidents each year, and it has been a long known fact that driving in a car is much more dangerous than any other sort of transportation out there. If we can reduce the number of people crowding the roadways with options like car transport, carpooling and mass transit, we’d be a lot better off- don’t you think?
