Car Commercials: Clever or Annoying?

Now that the auto industry is suffering with the almost sure bankruptcy of GM, will we begin to see a decline in the amount of auto advertising on television?  Quite frankly, it seems that people in the auto industry would benefit more from marketing used cars or cars that are less expensive.  For instance, I’ve personally noticed a lot more Toyota and Honda commercials than anything else, but are these car commercials actually working to drive business to the auto industry?

Clever or Annoying?

When it comes to car commercials, it seems like most people take that opportunity to get up and run errands rather than sit through yet another car commercial, especially if the commercial is for a local dealership.  Often times, the commercials are poorly done and have some sort of cheesy theme such as receiving a “free bobblehead doll” if you come in and purchase a car.  That sort of “reward” seems awfully small in comparison to the purchase that you would’ve just made.

Then there are car commercials that really catch our attention.  For instance, who can forget Honda’s infamous Rube Goldberg commercial? But at the end of the day, does it equate to increased sales for Honda….or for any other dealership?

In these economic times of uncertainty, I’m compelled to believe that any car commercials that are being produced; while their intention is to sell more vehicles, ultimately their main purpose will be to entertain the masses of people who can no longer afford to buy a new car let alone make the payments to maintain their current vehicle.
