Fleet Management Program Launched in D.C.
According to the Washington Business Journal, Washington D.C. has launched a new vehicle fleet management program for its government employees via Zipcar’s Fast Fleet Service.
Washington D.C. government employees will be able to access and reserve city vehicles at fast-fleet.com and select a car type and location. They will then be able to drive the car for “official business use” via a city-issued access card and integrated card reader mounted under the windshield.
Man, does it pay to be a government employee or what?
According to the article:
The program reduces costs by maximizing fleet utilization on an hourly basis, allowing many trips to be supported by a smaller number of cars. Fleet Share cars average as many as 10 drivers for every one car.
Apparently, the Washington D.C. government piloted the fleet program in October of 2008 with approximately 30 vehicles and four sites. The launch this month consists of almost sixty vehicles at eight different sites, including both hybrid and alternative fueled vehicles. On top of that, Washington D.C. has also cut approximately 360 vehicles from D.C.’s motor fleet, saving just over $6 million in the course of five years.
Hopefully, this new way of driving will continue to yield positive results as well as reduce the amount of pollution in the air. Way to go, Washington D.C. for being a trendsetter for future generations of car drivers- not to mention laying out a viable plan for other cities to try.
