Man With Bicycle Drags Family Along For the Ride

According to a recent news article published on Indystar.com, one Indianapolis man is taking the phrase “going for a bike ride” to a whole different meaning.  Steve Allen lives in Indianapolis, IN and is using his bicycle to get….well….everywhere.

The article states that Allen has at least five bicycles, using any one of them at any time to accomplish his transportation needs.  It doesn’t seem to matter what Mother Nature is brewing up outside, you can usually find him riding.

Allen is a 44-year-old-ex-Marine and typically rides anywhere between 150 to 200 miles per week all so that he can run errands and get to his job as a waiter.  Not only this, but he has included his family in his daily cycling across town. For instance, he pedals his six-year-old daughter 6 miles to school in the mornings from his house and makes it there in approximately twenty-five minutes- the same amount of time that it would take the average commuter in that area to make the same trip during rush hour!

So, why does he do it? Allen has estimated that he saves somewhere around $12,000 a year by not using a car.  This number accounts for things such as car insurance, gasoline, car payments and parking.  He’s not totally car-less though.  His wife has a 2010 Subaru Outback, which Allen will jump into when he is with his wife or entire family.  For Allen, however, the main reason why he straps on his helmet day after day is more health-related.  He claims that cycling keeps his energy up and allows him the “luxury of not counting calories.” [source]
