Massachusetts Governor Signs Transportation Reform Bill

According to Forbes.com, Governor Deval Patrick , the governor of Massachusetts, signed a transportation bill into law recently.  This transportation law is a huge deal because it eliminates the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority while leaving the Massachusetts Port Authority and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in tact.

While the Massachusetts governor seems happy with his decision, citing that the new law will put an end to wasteful spending, there is some irony in it all.  As it turns out, by agreeing to this new bill being turned into law, the Massachusetts governor will also be committed to approving nearly a 25 percent increase in the state sales tax, a chunk of which will go towards eliminating a proposed July 1, 2009 toll hike.

Clearly, it is not easy to make decisions like these and have them please everyone all around.  However, is the next best idea always to raise taxes on an American public that can already no longer afford to be taxed more?  Take a look at the following video to see where Governor Patrick stood on the issue of transportation and the gas tax a few months ago:
