More Cars on the Road During Thanksgiving?

According to a recent article published on msnbc.com, more Americans will be expected to hit the roads this holiday season versus flying out of the airports. No doubt, the drop in the number of people expected to book an airline ticket is more than likely due to the economy, which is still suffering some heavy blows.  The article states that according to AAA:

38.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home over the holiday weekend, an increase of 1.4 percent over last year. The number of people traveling by car is expected to increase by 2.1 percent while the number of fliers is projected to drop 6.7 percent. [source]

What About the Roads Being More Dangerous?

Apparently, most people are not nearly as concerned about the dangers facing them on the roadways or the fact that they will more than likely be putting more wear and tear on their vehicles.  No- what they are more focused on is the immediate money that they will save by avoiding air travel.  Recently, I checked out plane fare for booking a flight from  North Carolina to New York and was shocked to find out that it would cost me somewhere in the ball park of just over $400 to fly home!  For less than half that amount, I would be able to drive up and back (and probably in less time too, considering the airline delays, etc.).

What do you think? Do you think that it’s better to fly or drive during the holidays?
