Learning How to Throw Your ‘Freight’ Around: Truckers May Have to Share the Roads with Cyclists…

According to a recent article published on NPR, truckers may have to make more room for cyclists when it comes to moving freight around.

In a handful of major cities, some companies are turning to bike freight as a cheaper, greener way of delivering their products without using fossil fuels.

Now, who doesn’t want to help the planet out a teeny, little bit? Bike transport may be the wave of the future for many eco-friendly optimists. However, is it really feasible? After all auto transport and other types of car transport services do such an awesome job as it is when it comes to getting stuff delivered on time and in one piece. Why change something when it works so well?

Seeing the World Through Green-Colored Glasses

Many of us may choose to see the world we live in through ‘green-colored glasses,’ but the fact remains, if we are relying on a person to bike around freight that weighs upwards of 1,000 pounds (as the article indicates), there’s only so much freight that can be delivered as well as so much manpower. In smaller, metropolitan areas such as New York City or even the greater Boston area, bike transport makes sense, as it is already difficult enough to navigate smaller, narrow, more densely populated areas with large trucks. However, for more rural areas such as North Carolina, large trucks still make sense.

Something else to think about would also be the liability issues involved in whatever people are hired to bicycle around town towing all of that weight behind them…
