New York Introduces Toughest DUI Law in Country
According to a recent article published in CBS News, police in the state of New York are really cracking down on drunk drivers after a series of horrific accidents took place involving both mothers and children. Drunk driving isn’t only restricted to the state of New York though. Rather, it is a nationwide problem that has gained wide-sweeping attention over the past couple of years. According to statistics provided within the CBS article, approximately 12,000 people were killed in drunk driving crashes last year; that’s one fatality every 45 minutes.
Sobering isn’t it?
The New York bill to crack down on drunk drivers is being named after 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, who was killed in a car crash in October 2009 after her friend’s mother was driving while intoxicated. Leandra was one of seven girls who was crammed into a Mercury Sable when Carmen Huertas, 32, lost control of the vehicle just before 1:00 a.m. The girls, who were all between the ages of 11 and 14, were on their way to Ms. Huertas’ home in the Bronx for a slumber party. While the other girls suffered non-life threatening injuries, Leandra never made it and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. A tragic end to a life never fully lived.
