Self-Driving Cars and Eyelid Monitors – I Don’t Get It

Now I will tell you something; I just do not understand why people want robots to take over driving cars these days. Ever since Google came out with those robot cars, I cannot help but to wonder if the art of driving is a dying art form. There just ain’t nothing better than sliding into the driver’s seat of a fine automobile and feeling that engine purr like a cat when you step on the gas pedal. Why would you want to just sit there and let a computer do all of the driving?

I just found that a Japanese company just invented some kind of new-fangled gadget that watches the eyelids of a driver to make sure that they don’t fall asleep driving. Fall asleep driving? How could anyone fall asleep driving? To me, that’s like falling asleep on a roller coaster. If you’re falling asleep, then you ain’t driving. What’s next? Are they going to invent a football helmet to make sure you don’t fall asleep playing football? I tell you, some of the things I see these days I just cannot fathom.

You also may hear about “driver assist technology.” They hook up all these fancy cameras, sensors, bells, and whistles to cars just so that you can drive without really paying attention to what you’re doing. It is a sad day when people need a beeping alarm to tell them that they are about to back into something. The way I learned to drive, you looked in the mirror and you watched where you were going! You know what I think? I think they invented this stuff so to make it easier for people could send text messages and play video games while driving.

In my world, cars are for driving. (Unless you’re standing outside in the sun, wiping the sweat from your brow, and admiring the new coat of wax you just applied). It is my sincerest hope that the art of driving stays alive and well. Do me a favor. The next time you’re in your car, just drive!
