The Green Machine
No I’m not talking about Australian boxer Danny Green, but rather the line of vehicles to be produced by Ford with their EcoBoost engine. The engine is a V6 which Edmonds describes as being comprise of:
Four- and six-cylinder variants. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, earmarked for the Explorer America Concept and other products, will deliver 275 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. A twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, which will be used in the all-wheel-drive MKS, will make 340 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque.
Ford said the technology will provide a fuel-economy improvement of 20-30 percent over current engines — and is relatively affordable compared with diesels and hybrids. The EcoBoost range is designed to be used in a wide variety of applications, from small cars to large trucks.
I wonder if our current gas prices and eco-concerns will be enough to radically change auto producers mindset for the long-haul, or will these measures only last while our wallets are strangled by high fuel costs? I am reminded that the fuel shortages of the 70’s lead to smaller cars for a time, but certainly we were right back to square one when our current gas crisis hit. So will green be a fad or the standard in auto manufacturing from now on? I’m sure that the first thing on the mind of Ford’s executives is if it will sell, and after that I think it is on us as consumers to decide whether we want to repeat the errors of the 70’s and ignore a future gas shortage, or we must decide that as long as their is gas, there will be gas shortages as well.
