Toyota to Make Largest Auto Recall

According to a recent article published in Reuters, Toyota Motor Crop will be recalling just under 700,000 Camry vehicles as well as other sedans made at two of its China ventures.  This will be the largest recall in the country.  All of the the hubub is in order to fix a faulty electric switch in the window.

They need a recall for that?!

Analysts speculate that the recall will not have any longstanding impact on the Japanese auto maker’s growth prospect in China due to the fact that the defect is relatively minor (I mean, c’mon- it’s a window!).  The article goes on to quote Huang Zherui, an analyst with CSM Worldwide who had this to say about the recall:

The size of the recall is big, but it won’t be a major problem for Toyota given the nature of the defect. Still, there will be some impact for the short term..

Apparently, the list of recalls includes 384,736 Camry models made  in south China with Guangzhou Auto  between May of 2006 and December of 2008 as well as a total of 22,767 Yaris compact cars made by the same venture between May and December of 2008.  As if that wasn’t enough, the list extends to also include 35,523 Vios cars made at a joint venture with FAW between February and December of 2008 and 245,288 Corolla models made at the same venture between may 2007 to December of 2008.

There have been no casualties, thus far, that have been linked between the faulty window(s).  Perhaps you could say that the people at Toyota are just perfectionists- which isn’t such a bad thing to be when you’re spending a chunk of money on a vehicle.

  3. This confirms what I have long suspected, that the supposed quality superiority of Toyota is a matter of perception, rather than being based on actual numbers of defects per vehicle. I see Consumer Reports has dropped their rating as a result of this recall.
