Watching for Emergency Vehicles
According to the Ministry of Transportation,
It’s the law for any driver who sees and hears an emergency vehicle approaching from either direction to move out of the way. [source]
However true the above statement may be, it seems as if more and more people are doing their own thing whenever they see emergency vehicles on the roads. That being said, the following are a few tips and pointers for watching out for emergency vehicles:
- Multi-Lane Highway: If you see an emergency vehicle approaching; no matter what direction they are approaching from, put your turn signal on and move to the right hand side of the road.
- Two-Lane Road: If you are on a two-lane road, put your turn signal on and move as far to the right of the road as you can, coming to a complete stop.
- One-Way Street: If you find yourself on a one-way street and happen to see an emergency vehicle approaching, put your turn signal on and move to either the left or the right hand side of the street (whichever one is clear) and come to a complete stop
- At Intersections: Intersections can be tricky because although you may hear the sirens of an approaching emergency vehicle, you may not necessarily know what direction it is coming from. Therefore, traffic in an intersection must yield in all directions until the emergency vehicle passes through.
- Stay Alert: This is a direct reference to what is going on inside of your vehicle. For instance, if you have your radio blasting so loudly that the glass feels as if it might shatter, then there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to hear an approaching emergency vehicle. Keep the noise level down. Also, do not block the shoulder on highways because emergency vehicles may use this to drive on. For more advice, visit here.
