White House Continues to Play Waiting Game With Transportation System
According a recent article published in the Washington Post, the White House is putting the brakes on the long-awaited transportation overhaul. For months, House representatives have worked to produce a 775 page, $500 billion bill that would create a new fund for overhauling the United States’ aging, congested, carbon-emitting transportation. Funds would cover the cost of much needed road repairs as well as increase funding for rail and public transportation, not to mention include reforms intended to slowly but surely wean us off of being so dependent on fossil fuels.
But Obama has identified this as one area that can wait.
With increasing numbers of Americans growing weary of how much money the Obama administration is spending, as well as the fact that Washington seems to be consumed at the moment with the nation’s failing health care system, I guess it’s only understandable that the transportation issue can wait.
According to Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood:
President Obama does have a vision for transportation. It’s not something he’s going to ignore or turn a blind eye to at all…The timing is where we part company. [source]
In the meantime, while all the debates continue, the Highway Trust Fund is claiming that it needs an additional $6 billion in order to get through this summer alone! I don’t know what’s going on with all of these “debates,” but it seems to me that Washington better get their priorities in order and do a little less talking and a little more action…just an opinion.
