History of Audi

At the turn of the century in 1899, August Horch established a company that was known as A. Horch & Cie, but this was a short lived company. Due to management disputes. August was forced to leave the company. A few years later August opened a new company and the very first Audi was produced in 1910. Horch was, once again, forced out the company and banned from using his name in relation to a starting a new company involved with automobile's, so he and his friends needed a new name. The word  Audi means hear in Latin and Horch also means hear in German. This was the birth of the legendary car company known as Audi today. Of course, there were trials and tribulations along the way.

In 1920, August Horch left the company but still stayed involved as a member of the board. Audi began making history in 1921 when the Audi Type K was released. This was the first German manufactured car with a left handed drive. During the 20's the Audi took off and began to establish dominance due to the left hand drive speed as it provided a better view of traffic and made it safer to drive. In 1932, Audi merged with a few car companies and became known as the Auto Union. The Auto union focused on small cars and by 1938 it had accounted for close to 20% of the German marketplace.

With the onset of World War II, Auto Union' plants were shut down and used for military options. The Soviet Army had control at this point and dismantled factories, wiped out companies assets and in 1948 the company was deleted from the commercial register. Times were tough, but Audi is tougher. After many years and many obstacles over come, the biggest highlight occurred in 1964 when Volkswagen acquired 50 percent of the Audi business, who was still under the name of Auto Union at the time.  

In 1970, Audi was seen by the world and under it's very own name. Volkswagen released the Audi 100 which was soon followed by the Audi 80/Fox. As the times changed, so did the Audi. In the early 90's Audi began to reinvent self and start to compete with such luxury brands as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Today, Audi has become one of the most sought after luxury vehicles.
