History of Chevrolet
Chevrolet, otherwise known as Chevy, is one of the largest automobile manufactures in the United States, not to mention one of the largest worldwide. With a sordid and colorful history, Chevrolet is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, as the company got its start 1911, as the Chevrolet Motor Company. It was founded by both Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, whom collaborated with William Little and Dr. Edwin R. Campbell to create Chevrolet Motors.
Chevrolet was a former race car driver turned engineer, and the team of founders were banking on his reputation to bring Chevrolet into the limelight. As for the other founders, Durant was a former GM employee, Campbell was Durant’s son-in-law, and Little was the maker of the car known as the “Little.” The four together rolled out the first Chevrolet car, which Etienne Planche designed. Released in 1912, it was known as the Series C Classic Six, and it was very pricey, not a car for the common folk.
Later in 1915, Chevrolet disagreed with Durant about a car design and later sold his shares to him, and then in 1918, GM bought Chevrolet and Durant became the GM president. Chevrolet has not been part of the company since. 1918 also saw the first V-8 motor and the first overhead valve in-line six valve motor introduced to Chevy cars.
Between the 1920s and 1940s, Chevy’s main competition was Ford, but then Chrysler came along and stole the show with its lower than average priced Plymouth line in 1928, which prompted Chevy to produce the “cheapest ever 6 valve,” the Standard Six. Later in 1953, Chevy released the Corvette, in 1954, the Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe, and later in 1955 came the small block V-8 engine. This engine has remained the standard small block eight valve engine ever since on most Chevy cars and trucks.
Later in 1958 came the legendary Impala and the El Camino, in 1960 came the Corvaire, and in 1967 the Camaro. Other familiar and legendary cars and trucks introduced by the maker include the Monte Carlo, Chevelle and the Caprice. Since then, Chevy began the production of the “compact car, which began with the Chevette, and went on to produce some of the best selling cars and trucks in the world – and it still does today.
