History of Honda

Honda was founded in the 1960s by Soichiro Honda. An avid fan of automobiles, Honda first worked as a mechanic, tuning race cars and then racing them himself. He was a self-taught engineer and after his initial piston designs were rejected by Toyota, he re-worked them and eventually won the Toyota contract.

A gasoline shortage in World War II prompted Honda to attach a small engine to his bicycle. He was intrigued by the way it worked and it led him to establish the Honda Technical Research Institute. Honda then developed a small 2-cycle motorbike engine. He called up a bike revival after the wreckage of the war and after receiving enough capital from over 18,000 bike shop owners, Honda engineered his first motorcycle, the Honda Club.

By 1964 under the organization of the Honda Motor Company, it became the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles. Honda then ventured onto automobiles and the company’s first one was the T360 mini pick-up truck. This was for sale in August 1963 and the company’s first car was the S500 sports car.

In 1986, Honda became the first Japanese automobile manufacturer to produce a luxury brand, the Acura. In 2001, Honda became the second-largest Japanese automobile manufacturer and by August 2008, it surpassed Chrysler as the fourth largest U.S. automobile manufacturer in the United States. Worldwide,  Honda is the sixth largest automobile manufacturer.

Along with its achievements with motorcycles and automobiles, the company has also successfully manufactured garden equipment, marine engines, personal watercraft and power generators. It also produces mountain bikes and actively participates in race car driving and sports sponsorships. Honda is also involved with artificial intelligence/robotics research and aerospace. Its founder is no longer alive but his design curiosity still remains. Honda is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and its company’s assembly plants are around the world.

Honda Civic

The Honda Civic launched in 1972 and it is a line of subcompact and compact cars. In its July 1972 debut, the car was a two-door but three months later it changed to a three-door hatchback. The car featured a transverse engine mounting of an 1169 cc engine and front-wheel drive. It included an AM radio, heater, foam-cushioned trim, two-speed windshield wipers. Through its generations, the car offered greater options including air conditioning, power locks, leather upholstery, satellite-linked navigation and a six-speed manual transmission.

The car has become known as a sporty, reliable, fuel-efficient and environmentally-friendly car. Prior to  the 1990s, the Civic was one of three Honda cars sold in the United States until the 1990s when the models expanded. The Civic was the top-selling car in Canada for 13 years and internationally it has also been a top-seller. The car has gone through several generations, becoming larger and more upscale. It is now in line with the Honda Fit and Accord.

Honda Crosstour

The Honda Crosstour launched in 2008 and it is referred to as the Honda Accord Crosstour. The car features components from the V-6 Honda Accord Sedan; however, the car is taller, rides higher and is heavier with its hatchback body style. It has the reflective strips from the Japanese Inspire model.

The car is easy to get in and out of for passenger but the headroom is low and it can be a challenge for tall passengers. The trunk space is also a little small for hauling cargo and carrying a lot of items.

The car has a lot of heft and it is many features to enjoy. This includes a 360-watt sound system and dual-zone climate control. The 2012 models include standard USB connectivity, Bluetooth and a rear-view camera system which will help small drivers. The new SE model have improved aerodynamics and a five-speed automatic transmission to help improve gas mileage.

Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V launched in 1995 and it was based on the Honda Civic platform. It was created to satisfy the demand for a sport-utility vehicle from Honda. The CR-V is a front engine, front-wheel drive/all-wheel drive, varying by market.

CR-V has different meanings but the most common one is Civic Recreation Vehicle; however, for the UK market, some literature lists CR-V as Compact Recreational Vehicle and the Japanese consumers may know it was Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.

Other than Honda’s Element sold in Canada and the United States, the CR-V is Honda’s smallest SUV. Size-wise, the CR-V is in between Honda’s Element and Pilot; however, Element will be discontinued and the CR-V will become Honda's beginning-level SUV. The car is produced in Japan and the United Kingdom for markets across the world but the North American models are produced in East Liberty, Ohio. The CR-V is currently in its third generation and it continues to sell well.

Honda CR-Z

The Honda CR-Z launched in 2010 and it is the company’s sport hybrid coupe. It is a compact hybrid electric car. It features a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain with the look and feel of traditional sports car. The name CR-Z means Compact Renaissance Zero and it was supposed to embody the renaissance in the compact car design that begins from fundaments.

The car was introduced as a concept vehicle in October 2007 at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show and then in the United States at the 2008 Detroit North American International Auto Show. The CR-Z is the successor to Honda’s second generation Honda CR-X. There are similarities in their exterior design. In the U.S., the CR-Z is one of the least-polluting vehicles on the market and it is the only gasoline-electric hybrid model that can come with a manual transmission.

CR-Z has Honda’s IMA technology and it is the sixth car in the company to have it. The car’s design and production follows two Honda hybrid concept cars: the Honda Remix and the Honda Small Hybrid Sports car. The CR-Z is currently promoted on its Web site and Honda has been promoting it on the Facebook game, Car Town

Honda Element

The Honda Element launched in 2002 and it features a front engine, front-wheel drive/four wheel drive.  The vehicle is a compact crossover SUV and it is based on the CR-V platform with modifications. The car followed a concept after a vehicle called Model X. This was initially shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit but developed in 1998. The Model X was designed to be a vehicle that combined features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle. The engineers wanted owners to use the car for road trips and to carry outdoor sports equipment.

The four-seat Element can haul large loads and its floor is constructed with textured urethane so it is easy to clean. The car’s fabric is stain-resistant with rear seats that recline and fold up. The can be removed to carry different loads. The car has a 2.4 liter K engine, an i-VTEC four-cylinder engine that produce 166 hp (124 kW) at 5500 rpm and 160 ft·lbf (217 N·m) of torque at 4500 rpm. The Element has front-wheel drive or the “Real Time” four-wheel drive system. At the end of the model year 2011, the car will no longer be produced due to declining sales.

Honda FCX- Clarity

The Honda FCX-Clarity launched in June 2008 but was unveiled by the company in November 2007. This car is a hydrogen fuel cell model and its design is based on the 2006 Honda FCX Concept.

The FCX Clarity has zero emissions and five-minute fueling times. It is a full function large sedan. Interest in the car took off right away and five U.S. customers received their vehicles in July 2008. It was five months later when Japan introduced the car. One of the first customers was a satisfied Honda owner: he had owned the first-generation Honda FCX.

The FCX Clarity may be leased in the U.S., Japan and Europe. The car is currently only available to U.S. customers who live in Southern California where they have access to "fast-fill" hydrogen stations. Outside of the U.S., there’s only a small number of the car leases and part of the reason for this is due to a limitation on Honda for the number of fuel cell vehicles to be put on the road because there are so few of hydrogen stations that they can use. More have been scheduled to open in Southern California with hopes of mass production by 2018.

Honda Fit

The Honda Fit launched in June 2001 and it is a five-door hatchback subcompact car.  The car includes Honda’s Global Small Car Platform and it features interior packaging design with the fuel tank under the front seat to enable the car’s rear seats to fold flat. The car is sold in over 115 countries and it is known as Jazz in Europe, Asia, Australia, Oceania, the Middle East and Africa while the car has the name Fit in Japan, China, and the Americas.

It ranked No. 1 in sales for most of 2002. The car debuted in the United States and then Canada at the January 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. After two years, the car was replaced with a 2009 model, which was released earlier in Japan. Future iterations contain the same platforms worldwide. The Honda Fit was going to initially be named “Fitta", but shortened and renamed after it was discovered that in several Nordic languages, fitta is a popular and vulgar slang word.

Honda Insight

The Honda Insight launched in 2000 and it is a hybrid electric vehicle. The car represented Honda’s vehicle to feature the company’s Integrate Motor Assist system. The car’s first generation included a three-door hatchback. It is a two-seater, single-trim manual transmission but it does not have an air conditioner. This car is based on Honda’s J-VX concept car that was unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show and was introduced to Japan in November 1999. One month later in December 1999, the Insight became available in North America. The car featured optimized aerodynamics and a lightweight aluminum structure which maximized fuel efficiency and minimized emissions.

The Honda Insight was recognized by the EPA as the most efficient gasoline-fueled vehicle ever. It had a highway rating of 61 miles per US gallon and a combined city/highway rating of 53 miles per US gallon. The car is currently in its second-generation and went on sale in the United States in March 2009.  It is now a five-door hatchback. It was the least expensive hybrid vehicle available in the US. In Japan, the Honda's Insight is the top-selling vehicle and it is marketed as the cheapest gas-electric vehicle.

Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey launched in 1994. It is a minivan that had been developed during Japan’s economic crisis of the 1990s. The Odyssey is based on the Honda Accord’s platform and it features a four-cylinder engine, all-disc anti-lock braking, all wishbone suspension and a four-speed automatic transmission. The car’s design has a unibody construction, with dual airbags and glove boxes zone heating and cooling. This has a 20 percent greater capacity the Accord's system and it has conventional rear swing-open doors. There is a third row seat that can fold could fold and tumble into a compartment underneath the floor. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Shuttle and future generations reflected market variations with Honda marketing a larger Odyssey in North America and a smaller one in Japan. Now in its fourth generation beginning in 2011, the North American Odyssey is sleek and more modern than its previous models.

Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot launched in 2002 and it features a front-engine, front-wheel drive. The car is a mid-size, crossover SUV. The first generation of the Pilot was released in the summer of 2002 and in 2006; the car got a new front and rear fascias, redesigned interior and new standard features. Its second generation launched in 2008. The Pilot was produced to meet the larger SUV demand with third-row seats. Honda had been lacking in this market, only producing the compact crossover SUV CR-V and the Honda Passport.

The vehicle shares features with other Hondas including the powertrain with the Acura MDX  luxury SUV, and the platform is shared with the Honda Odyssey minivan and the Honda Accord sedan. It is Honda’s largest SUV.The car is sold in North America and the Middle East sells it as the Honda MR-V. In September 2011, the car had a setback when 300,000 of them had been recalled for a seat belt defect.

Honda Ridgeline

The Honda Ridgeline launched in 2005 and it is a mid to full-size sport utility truck. It was Honda’s first venture into the North American pickup truck market. The Ridgeline was awarded Motor Trend's Truck of the Year for 2006 and it is considered one of the most reliable and safest cars in its class. It was the first pickup to achieve a five-star rating from the U.S. National Traffic Safety Administration. It is currently the only car-based pickup in the United States and Canada. It was shown in concept form as the Honda SUT in 2004.
