History of Mazda
The Mazda Motor Corporation hasn’t always produced vehicles—and the company hasn’t always held the same name. In fact, since its inception in 1920, this corporation has undergone some very large changes. The company—initially named Toyo Cork Kogyo--was founded by a man named Jujiro Matsuda. Matsuda, along with several investors, took over another company (the Abemaki Tree Cork Company). Soon, the company moved from cork production to industrial production, making machine tools. At this point, in 1927, the company was renamed Toyo Kogyo Kaisha. A test run of 30 three-wheel trucks were produced and exported to China; this vehicle was called the “Mazda-Go-A.”
The name of the company was changed again in 1934—this time the company was called Mazda. The new name was chosen to honor the Zoroastrian God, Ahura-Mazda. This is the god of wisdom, intelligence, and harmony. The new name also honors the name of the company founder, as the‘t’ in his name (Matsuda) is silent. After 1934, Mazda began producing more vehicles, including small eight-wheeled trucks and small sedans. A ‘Flying-M’ logo design appeared on every vehicle, showing Mazda’s agility, speed, and capability of soaring to new heights. During the Second World War, Mazda stepped away from vehicle manufacturing. The company produced weapons for the Japanese military throughout the war.
After the war, Mazda came out with many innovative changes. A new emblem for their vehicles was the start. Then the company produced their first two-door passenger cars. Next, technical work began in cooperation with other companies on rotary engines. This allowed Mazda to emerge as the only manufacturer to feature three different types of engines—the gasoline piston, the diesel engine, and the rotary engine.
In 1963, Mazda reached the production milestone of one million units. The company went on to design and manufacture many models of trucks and cars over the next several years. By 1970, Mazda was exporting their vehicles to the United States. A new design of the Mazda name to be used on every vehicle was designed in 1975—and this design is still in use today. The 1973 oil crisis caused some financial turmoil for Mazda; consequently, the company developed a partnership with the Ford Motor Company. The two companies worked together to sell vehicles in Japan and in the United States. The partnership between Mazda and Ford is not as strong as it was back in the 1970’s; however, it is still an important one today.
From the 1990’s through to today, Mazda has been devoted to building innovative vehicles that are both safe and fun to drive.
