History of Nissan

Since being founded in 1934 by Yoshisuke Aikawa, Nissan motors has been a driving force in the automotive realm throughout Japan and worldwide. The company formerly introduced its vehicles under the Datsun brand name and is one of the biggest and most influential multinational automakers the world over. The company is a part of a two-way alliance with French automaker, Renault. Along with Toyota and Honda, Nissan is one of the biggest foreign competition for the American “Big Three” automotive companies which are Ford, GM and Chrysler.

The company now offers a large range of models under the Nissan brand name, but also offers a luxury brand called Infiniti. For the most part, Nissan produces vehicles that range from compact cars to full-sized SUVs. The company's vehicles are known for being affordable, well built and fuel efficient. Because of the fact that the company produces such affordable vehicles has really allowed it to take advantage of selling to markets in emerging markets that many other automakers have overlooked due to the general consensus being that selling to these markets can prove to be riskier than selling to the more affluent markets such as the United States and Europe. With that being stated, this marketing philosophy seems to really be paying off for CEO Carlos Ghosn and Nissan's shareholders.

Over the last 12 years since Ghosn has taken over the reigns of Nissan-Renault, they have seen a veritable renaissance of the brand in which a resurgence of interest in more affluent markets has occurred due to the company's promulgation of fuel efficiency and electric vehicles. As Nissan is opening more and more assembly plants worldwide while continuing to properly position its brand as a high performance, affordable yet eco-friendly option, it should prove to be a formidable competitor to the world's automakers for many years to come.
