History of Porsche

A prison cell seems like an unlikely place for the beginning of the powerful and high-performing sports car named after its maker. Ferdinand Porsche was born in 1875 and while he spent almost two years in a prison in France, charged as a war criminal of World War II, his son designed and built the first Porsche race and sports car.

Porsche made a name among the best cars in the racing field. Winning more than a fair share of events, Porsche has gone on to become a leader of fast winners. The first model rolled off the assemble line and quickly went into regular production in 1950. A speedster version followed within four years. Many models traveled in the steps of the earlier version, with the biggest difference coming around with more speed and power.

Porsche Goes Public

Porsche began to crank out cars to the masses of ordinary people who simply wanted an amazing car to sport around town. The same time as the general public embraced the speedster, the racing industry was benefiting from the powerful engine that was winning races around the world.

The Beginning of the End

Ferdinand Porsche died in 1951, and his son Ferry died in 1988. The high prices of gas almost killed the Porsche. The company was almost taken over by a larger company, but the former head of production, Dr. Wendelin Wiedekin, filled the shoes of head CEO and Porsche was saved. Decades of similar models of 9-series were the norm until Porsche began a new era in names, as well as a new generation of Porsche lovers. The new Porsche Company pushes out SUV sports packages faster than the name Porsche can roll off the tongue. Porsche has come a long way since the first sports car. A few things remain the same, though, and those would be speed, power, and beauty.

Porsche 500E

Hand-built by Porsche, this luxury sports sedan hit the assembly production line from 1990 to 1994. Most of the general public is unaware that in 1995 gave a few customers special orders before the final 500E production was laid to rest. The Porsche parts were transported between the Mercedes and Porsche company and took over two weeks to complete one model.

Many car enthusiasts, especially Porsche and Mercedes Benz collectors, consider the 500E models a classic. The limited edition, sleek and classic design, the hand designed and built fabrication, and the distinctive pedigree are all reasons why this particular model is considered a classic. Changes were made during the production run, but these changes were few. These included modifications in the exterior style and design and less powerful engine, although the engine power was reduced only slightly compared to the original. After market modifications were varied and individualized according to the owner.

Porsche 356

The first two-door sports car created by Porsche was the 356. Easy handling with a lightweight construction this little baby quickly landed on the racetrack, winning trophy after trophy. The engine was placed in the rear of the vehicle and boasted rear wheel drive. Production lasted until 1965, with almost two decades of 356 models hitting the streets. It is estimated that almost half of these first models are still in existence.

The 356 was barely noticed at its birth, but it was not long until the unique aerodynamics and custom build became popular among racecar drivers around the world. The Porsche soon became the number one choice for fast drivers as well as the race fans. Born with a hard top or a convertible top, few variants affected the 356. The major changes took place in the over all function of the car. The very last revision for this model was the disc brakes featured in 1964.

Porsche 550

The first car designed by Porsche to be used specifically for racing was the 550. It was inspired by its sister model the 356 Speedster and used exclusively for racing. The car was built as close to the ground as feasible not to affect the driving ability. As a matter of fact, the 550A won the first over all major racing win. It boasted a lighter frame and a more rigid chassis contributed to the win.

The 550 is the most reproduced classic car. Many companies have used real Porsche blueprints in the production process. Some companies build real life copies from the ground up, including aluminum creations.  These are so near the original, it may be difficult to tell it is a replica. Porsche 550 has been known as the nickname car. Names such as the “Giant Killer” are popular as a nickname. James Dean was killed in a Porsche 550 in 1955, which also had nickname.

Porsche 908

This sports racing car was the first one to be built with the largest sized engine allowed in the World Champion. The Porsche 908 had five versions and all versions began with the same number. The 908 LH Coupe, the 908/2 Spyder, the 908/3 Spyder 70/’71, and the 908/3 Spyder Turbo were all built from 1968 to 1981. The Turbo had the longest production run, lasting from 1975 until 1981. Many 908 racecars are still on the track today. Trophy’s and titles hang on many racers walls because they drove this beloved and well-crafted car.

Ferdinand Piech designed the 908 to continue in the steps of its predecessors, the 906 Porsche, 907/Porsche and the 910 Porsche. Every one of the models in this version underwent changes to make a better performance. The first 908 built in 1968 needed more improvements before it would go on to impress anyone.

Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 is a grand and luxurious two-door sports car made in Stuttgart, Germany, with production beginning in 1963. This particular model has went through many significant changes and continuous develop since its inceptions back in the early years.

The 911 has been modified and revamped both in the public sector and by the factory. The automotive competition is a strong reason for the modifications. This model has become one of the most successful and sought after racecars of al time. Identical to the grandfather of the Porsche design, the humble but beloved Volkswagen Beetle, the rear engine and air-cooled component is the oldest sports coupe still in the factory for production. Air-cooled engines are no longer used. The engines are now water-cooled.

The Porsche 911 was designed a long time before it was actually built. Ferdinand Porsche sketched this model in 1959. The classic 911 was built in 1963, yet because France owned the rights to the name of cars with zero as the middle number, Porsche went with the name 911.

Porsche 912

This model Porsche was to become an even better seller than the 911, but only in the beginning. Light weight and nimble, it handled the road extremely well. The engine was designed to produce 30 miles per gallon on the road. 912 became one of the best fuel efficiency sports car with four seats.

Porsche 912 hit the market with a lower price tag and this was a very attractive incentive for consumers to dish out the money for the new Porsche. The 911 was still undergoing improvements and until it reached it best mark, the 912 out sold the 911. Completing the updates of the 911 and feeling as though the 912 was no longer needed, the company suspended the production of the 912. This discontinuation only last until 1976 when Porsche re-introduced the 912 as the 912E and sold in the United States. The 912 was driven as a street car and a race car.

Porsche 914

The Porsche 914 was designed and built to replace the 912. A mid sized engine was sold conjunctively with Volkswagen and Porsche. Volkswagen needed a replacement for one of their coupes and Porsche needed a replacement for the 912. The answer was the 914. Porsche handled the development because of the contract between Volkswagen and Porsche.

Porsche decided to sell both the Volkswagen style and the Porsche style to avoid any risks involved in selling the cars with the same body type. The agreement did not last long between the two companies because the chairman of Volkswagen passed away shortly after the release of the first model in 1968. Many owners have modified the body of the 914, making it a personal and unique, one of a kind car. Steel fenders and fiberglass bumpers are only two ways the ody of the 914 has been changed.

Porsche 928

One of the most expensive models offered by Porsche is the 928. Luxury and comfort go hand in hand with this model. The Porsche company has underwent so much change since the birth of the Porsche that the higher up executives decided it was time to add a piece of luxury to their production line.

Most of the body was built out of galvanized steel, but there was plenty of aluminum in the design to keep the car light weight. Extra space for luggage was made possible by the hatchback. The factory did not offer this model as a convertible, but some aftermarket models gave the option of the convertible top. This conversion raised the price of the 928 more than double. Body changes for the Porsche 928 was evident in the spoilers that were added. Different rims also contributed to a new look.

Porsche 930

The sports car introduced as the 930 model was the fasted production duration of Porsche in Germany. The big debut happened in the Paris Auto Show in 1974 and was simply named Turbo. It was not until 1976 that the United States was introduced to 930 Turbo.

A very fast car, the powerful turbocharged motor delivered speed with a high skill needed to drive the car. The car was easy to put into a tailspin. This was doubled if the driver let off the throttle as a common reaction to out of control spinning. Trained and skilled drivers learned very quickly how to handle this powerful racecar allowing the vehicle to our ride the majority of other sports cars. Porsche discontinued the G-series 930 after the 964 model came into production. The new model had similar versions of the transmission and engine.

Porsche 959

The first ever high-performance car to employ all wheel drive, the Porsche 959 was manufactured from 1986 to 1989. This powerful car was labeled as the most technologically advanced cars of its time. It also grabbed the title of the fastest streetcar on the road. The model was so impressive to the executives of Porsche that they decided to make all wheel drive a standard feature on future models.

Porsche decided to use an already made and built engine rather than starting from the ground up to design the new model. The lightweight body had become a regular feature of the Porsche. This model was no different. The makers decided to use aluminum instead of the steel normally used for the car. The car weighed very little, which attributed to the over all high performance. The aerodynamics were also created for better stability and an automatic adjustment for ride height created a better drivability.

Porsche 964

The Porsche 964 is sports car coupe produced between 1989 and 1994. Named the 911 Carrera by the manufacturer, the 964 was the internal name and eventually became the same name to keep it apart form other 911 models.

A European version was introduced in 1992, with a basic interior and labeled as the Carrera RS. This sports car was not sold in the Untied States until 1993 and was named the RS American. The Carrera RS came with no bells and whistles. The interior was a bare bones package. No power windows or cruise control and the back seats were gone. The model was very lightweight and manufactured with an aluminum hood. The American model boasted no leather seats. The cloth covered seats were not the only thing paired down on the RS American. The lightweight version did not need the extra weight from power steering, a sunroof, radio, and even the air conditioning.

Porsche 968

The Porsche 968 became the last in the run of the two-decade production run. Introduced as the 924, it evolved over the years as a 944, 944s, the 944s2. Other similar models showed up and eventually led to the last one being the 968.

The model was manufactured and sold not only as a coupe, but also as a convertible. The style was similar, yet distinct, from the earlier versions on this Porsche line, with differences being minor. New features included a new mounted antenna, single lens taillights, and a wider selection of colors, both on the interior and outside of the 968. A UK version of the 968 was titles the 968 Clubsport and eventually won the Performance Car of The Year Award in the UK. The Clubsport was only manufactured in Europe, Japan and Australia, although some were showing up in other places due to a gray market production.

I want to commend you for being so up-front with your pricing. I got a lower quote from another auto transport company - but once they added all the fees and insurance it ended up being much more than that original quote. I'm quite surprised at how much your company provides for your base rate.

They brought my car from California to Buffalo in 3 days. The whole process took 1 week. Great service. You should be in touch with the driver to know when exactly he will be at the destination because these guys are really fast and might deliver the car a bit too early.
