History of Toyota
The Toyota Motor Corporation, or Toyota for short, is a Japanese company headquartered in Toyota City, which is located in Aichi, Japan. Founded, trademarked, and registered in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda as a way to extend his father’s company, Toyota Industries, Toyoda decided to make cars after his first successful attempt at doing so in 1934 when he produced the Type A Engine at Toyota Industries. Two years later, young Toyoda created the first Toyota passenger vehicle, which was branded the Toyota AA.
While the Toyota brand remained and the company sold cars in Japan until 1957, compact sized cars sold after 1947 were branded Toyopet, and the first Toyopet sold was the Toyopet SA, and then came the SB and the Stout, both light trucks, and then the Crown and the Corona. In 1957, Toyota began its American legacy with the corona, promptly dropping the Toyopet name. In 1973 when oil and gasoline prices rose, Toyota became quite popular because Americans were beginning to value the small, compact sized car more because of their fuel-efficient ways. After receiving a Japanese award in the early 1980s for Quality Control, the Toyota Motor Company merged into one company with the Toyota Motor Sales division to become the Toyota Motor Corporation. In 1984 it entered into a joint venture with GM which they called New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., which is located in California.
In the 1990s, Toyota made mostly compact cars because of the need for fuel efficiency, but later decided to expand by producing full size trucks, starting with the T100. After the T100 came the Tundra, a Sport Utility Vehicle, and a few larger sedans including the Corrola, Camry, and Scion. In 1997, Toyota produced the first hybrid, the Prius, which is only now becoming popular due to the original price point. Since this time, Toyota has produced some of the most popular cars, with the Corolla being the most sold compact car of its kind, and Toyota has remained one of the top car manufacturing companies ever since – it is currently number one in the entire world.
Toyota Avalon
The Toyota Avalon is a full-size car that was first launched in 1994. Over the years, the car has changed and is now in it's 3rd generation. The Avalon was created to replace the Toyota Cressida that Toyota stopped making in 1992. The Avalon is a luxurious and spacious 4 door sedan that has been a popular choice for many over the past years. As with most Toyota's, the Avalon is packed with many safety features such as driver and passenger airbags, anti lock brakes, traction control, and in fact most of the Toyota's come with what Toyota calls the Star Safety System. The Avalon comes fully equipped with AM/FM radio with CD player, power locks, heated front seats and many more optional features as well. The Avalon has a starting price of $33,195 and is backed with the great warranty that one would expect from Toyota
Toyota Corolla
The Toyota Corolla is the single best selling Toyota car of all time. Manufactured as a subcompact car, which is somewhat smaller than a compact car, the Corolla first came to the American market in 1966. It gained its title of bestselling car the first time in 1997, as it had sold over 35 million as of that year, and its major redesigns may have had something to do with its popularity.
Odd Tidbits:
- The Toyota Corolla’s name comes from a Japanese legacy of naming all the Toyota models using the word Crown or some variation of it.
- Approximately one Corolla is sold every second of every day.
- The Corolla model is not only manufactured in Japan, but also in Brazil, Canada, China, India and many other countries; however, Toyota ceased producing the car in America in 2010.
- Some Corollas were four wheel drive models.
- It had a counterpart named the Toyota Corolla Tercel, but the Tercel was given its own designation in 1984 and it gained its own following since then.
Toyota Matrix
The Toyota Matrix is another of the Corolla line, called the Toyota Corolla Matrix, and it has yet to gain its own designation as a separate model, still carrying the Corolla name after almost 10 years in production. First released in 2001, the Matrix happened because General Motors and Toyota entered into a joint venture, producing this car and the Pontiac Vibe on the GM end.
A compact hatchback crossover utility vehicle, but appearing more like a hatchback station wagon, the Matrix was also sold as the Voltz in Japan from 2002 to 2004 when production stopped. The Matrix was redesigned partially in 2005 and received a complete redesign in 2007. It is currently in its second generation because while in its first, it suffered from numerous recalls due to a bolt being able to come loose, allowing the front door windows to break. Since it has been redesigned, it consistently receives a crash safety rating of five stars in most testing.
Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius is an electric car, and was one of the first ever manufactured and sold in the United States. First released in Japan in 1997, the Prius came to America in 2001, when the Californian Air Resources Board and the Environmental Protection Agency rated the Prius as the cleanest car United States, where air pollution is concerned.
Currently in its third generation, the Prius reached its millionth sold in May of 2008, with its largest sales countries being Japan and the United States. While the Prius is a fully electric car, Toyota is about to release a counter part to it called the Prius Plug in. Slated for release in the United States for mid-2012, and world wide by 2013, the Prius Plug in is going to be a hybrid gas/electric car, instead of a fully electric version. A prototype was released and showed off in the beginning of 2011.
Toyota Sienna
The Toyota Sienna is one of a few minivans that Toyota produces. Manufactured in Indiana, U.S., the Sienna has been in production since 1997, when it replaced the Previa, having a front wheel drive and complete minivan redesign so as to not look like the Previa. The original Sienna was smaller than the typical minivan, in 2004, Toyota redesigned it again to be a bit wider, thus more typical of a family style minivan.
The one thing that the Sienna has that no other minivan in its class has is an option for all wheel drive, and it underwent another redesign for the current 2011-model year. This newest Sienna won the Top Safety Award in February since the redesign, and is the first Sienna to receive the coveted award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In its third generation, the Toyota Sienna has won a total of five awards and it has some of the best sales that any minivan in its class has ever seen.
Toyota Tacoma
It is hard not to think of the Tacoma when you hear the word Toyota. The Toyota Tacoma was first rolled out in 1995. The Tacoma is one of 2 pickup trucks currently offered by Toyota. When the Tacoma was in it's early years it was known as a compact pickup truck. After the remodel of the 2nd generation in 2005, the Tacoma is now classified as mid- size vehicle. The Tacoma comes standard with safety features such as anti- lock brakes, rollover sensors, air bags, electronic brake force distribution and after 2009 all models also have the Toyota Star Safety System. This system added vehicle stability control, traction control as well as side curtain air bags. The Tacoma comes in 4 different models with the base model starting at $16,365 and the X-Runner being at the high end of the price tag starting at $25,735. If you are in the market for a mid size pick up truck, the Tacoma should be on top of your list. After all, it has been voted the number one compact year after year.
Toyota Yaris
The Toyota Yaris is one of the newer models released by Toyota, the number one car dealership in the world currently. Called a subcompact car because it is smaller than your average compact car, the Yaris has been in production since 1999. The first generation Yaris was produced between 1999 and 2005. Depending on the market it was being sold in, the Yaris also went by the name of “Echo” in this period. This first generation car came in three distinct models, the hatchback, the coupe and sedan.
The second generation Yaris was in production from the 2005 to the 2011 models. It too offered a choice of sedan or hatchback, however, Toyota dropped the coupe with this version. Today’s version of the Yaris is the third generation, and it has been in production only since 2011. Again, Toyota decided to drop a body style, and currently, the hatchback is the only one offered to consumers. One curious thing about the Yaris is that all of its hatchback models are modeled after the Japanese market Toyota Vitz.
