About the State of Kentucky

Nicknamed the “Blue Grass” state, Kentucky is located in the southeastern, central part of the United States. Originally a part of Virginia, Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union in 1792. Today, Kentucky is the 37th largest state in terms of land area and 26th overall for population. Kentucky received its nickname as the Bluegrass State based on the fact that bluegrass is present in many of the lawns and pastures throughout the state. Kentucky has several agricultural outputs which include: horses, cattle, tobacco, dairy products, hogs, soybeans and corn. Among its industrial outputs are: transportation equipment, chemical products, electric equipment, machinery, food processing, tobacco products, coal and tourism. Due to the calcium rich soil, the area near Lexington, KY is the leading region for breeding Thoroughbred racing horses. Additionally, Kentucky is among the top five states in terms of farmland, with more farms per square mile than any other U.S. state.
